Carmen had to draw on their wealth of experience and battling qualities to see off a determined challenge from the Armagh champions at Pairc Colmcille this afternoon. At half time with the aid of a strong breeze, Carmen seemed to have matters well in hand as they led by seven points to one. Indeed they could have been and should have been even further ahead but for some wasteful finishing and for a fine save from a Lynette Hughes penalty. Carmen`s first half scores came from Gemma Begley(3pts,2f), Maire Grogan, Nicole Hurson, Sinead McAleer and Maire Slane.
The Lurgan girls got the best possible start to the second half with a goal finished by Sinead Leonard from the first attack. Points from county stars Mags McAlinden(2) and Shauna O`Hagan had levelled the game within 12 minutes of the restart and it was clear that Carmen had a real battle on their hands as the Armagh girls` confidence soared.
But Carmen are at their best when they have to battle and back they came. A second penalty award came in the 47th min when Patricia McGurk was pulled down in the "square". This time Gemma Begley took on the responsibility and gave the keeper no chance. A minute later Nicole Hurson showed good awareness when a Gemma Begley free came back off the upright - the point put Carmen four up again.
The Clann girls showed some battling qualities of their own and with Sinead McCleary, Shauna O`Hagan. Mags McAlinden(1free) and Victoria Hannon(2points) leading the charged pulled back to within a point. Hannon`s final point was a drive just inches over the bar.
With backs to the wall Carmen dug deep with Lynette Hughes, Maire Grogan and Gemma Begley to the fore. A Patricia McGurk goal from a rebound was ruled out for a "square ball", keeping the outcome very much in the balance.Substitute Elaine Coyle pointed in the last minute and Carmen hung on to earn a meeting with Cavan`s Knockbride in the semi final next weekend.
